This course aims to improve both anatomical knowledge and operative skills in two areas: surgical approaches to access the facial skeleton and free vascularized flaps.
This is a hands-on course with
Thiel-preserved human anatomical specimens. Participants can either choose the
surgical facial access part of the course or the free vascularized flap part.
All practical sessions are preceded by detailed lectures on the relevant anatomical
areas. Each participant has the opportunity to perform all procedures
themselves. The surgical facial access part of the course is aimed at trainees in craniomaxillofacial surgery, ENT and/or head and neck surgery or as a refresher for more advanced surgeons. The free vascularized flap part of the course is for surgeons who would like to start or refresh their step wise anatomical based flap raising techniques.
After the course, participants should be able to:
Facial surgical approaches
- Describe the anatomical rationale for the
demonstrated facial accesses
- Perform the various approaches to the facial
skeleton
- Recognize the surrounding anatomical hard and
soft tissue structures
- Select and perform facial accesses
Free vascularized flap
- Explain the criteria for flap
selection
- Describe and recognize the relevant anatomy for the most commonly used free
vascularized flaps
- Recognize the surrounding anatomical
structures
- Perform the selected free flaps
- Perform free flaps, flap raising, and
reconstruction
Please take note that
this course consists of two focus areas. Registration is possible for either
'surgical access to the facial skeleton' or 'free flaps'.
