Description

Goal of the course

The goal of this AOCMF Lighthouse Course is to learn the topographic anatomy of the TMJ and its surgical approaches. This course is intended to provide knowledge and experience through which participants will clearly understand and apply the principles of TMJ reconstruction using local and distant autogenous tissues and TMJ prostheses according to AO principles and techniques.

Course description

The topics will be addressed in lectures, plenary discussions, and practical exercises on human anatomical specimens as well as through computer planning.

Learning objectives
Discuss the controversies around the treatment of condylar fractures (open versus closed)
Describe the topographic anatomy for surgical approaches to the TMJ
Describe the soft and hard tissue surgery around the TMJ
Perform computer planning for surgical treatment to correct facial asymmetry
Perform the repair of a condylar fracture with ORIF
Perform the reconstruction of the TMJ with a costochondral graft
Perform the key steps for placement of a TMJ prosthesis
